Mondays are dedicated to bringing you a restaurant review!

Is La Mexicana a Montrose institution? Since it’s been there forever (25 years), I’ll go ahead and say “yes”. Here’s the problem, it’s on the other side of town from where I reside, thus, I’ve only eaten there once…and it was for breakfast. That said, it was a d@mn fine breakfast. There are so many wonderful restaurants in that area of town, that I almost feel obligated to try a different one when I find myself in the area. Thus, my limited experience at La Mexicana.

Last Saturday, I found myself in the area. And I had a Tex-Mex craving. I had El Real on my right and La Mexicana a few blocks down on the left. I went left. This was a wise decision. At this stage of the game, La Mexicana is better than El Real. Both places are a tad overpriced, but given the location, I’m fine with that.

We started out with a small bowl of queso. It was a little runny for your typical queso, but I actually enjoyed this. It took our ravenous family of four about 10 minutes to down the queso. BTW, the complimentary chips and salsa were solid.

I passed on the standard mixed plate, and instead, went with the small shrimp cocktail and a meatless burrito. Score! This proved to be a wise decision. If you aren’t violently allergic to shrimp, just order this dish, and ask questions later. Here’s a quick rundown: Negatives: nothing  Positives: bigger shrimp than expected, sweet cocktail sauce, fresh chunks of avocado.

On to the burrito! I was a little hesitant with it being meatless, but given that I just consumed a sea-ful of shrimp, I felt I owed it to my heart to cut some corners. Wrong! Don’t be fooled, there’s nothing healthy about this massive, plate-length burrito. It’s stuffed with refried beans, cheese, rice, lettuce, guacamole, and sour cream. Good luck consuming more than half.

At first bite, it was apparent that this burrito didn’t need meat. It was perfectly tasty on its own. I am going back to La Mexicana very soon, and do something that’s rare for me…order the exact same thing.

Note, the parking lot sucks. It’s small and the odds of someone smashing into your car as you back out of a spot are very high.  Also, very underrated patio.

The meatless burrito sounds delicious! I must try that place on my lunch break one day soon.

Excellent choice for breakfast. They have an agua fresca de melon that is the best in America, the chips and red salsa are even better if you dip them into their guacamole too, and the cheese in the quesadilla is tangy perfecto. The carnitas are more like Spanish pernil, come se dice? succulent.

I am thoroughly convinced that well made carnitas are the greatest culinary creation in the history of the world. There…I’m done.

I’ve been going to La Mexicana for over 20 years. They have really come a long way from the corner store with a couple of tacos. Some of my favorites are the Huevos rancheros, Caldo de Pollo, the Jumbo burrito with beef fajita, Queso Guisado, and the pork tamales.

Damn…I almost got the pork tamales…although I have no regrets. But I might have to add them to my order next time!

Get them as an appetizer next time! Kids love em (non-spicy).

My tacos were FABULOUS, if a little salty. I had a ground beef soft taco and stewed chicken crispy taco…. both unbelievable.
