Reviewing the reviewers!

Each week, I’ll take a look back at what some of the best food writers in Houston are covering.  Good or bad…you’ll get my honest opinion.  And just so we’re on the same page, I’ll disclose what relationship, if any, I have with each writer.

I. The Piece: Is Rudy’s the Best Barbeque Joint in Houston? by J.C. Reid
The Opinion: J.C. tries to make a case, but I say no. And if it is, just run for the hills. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that he makes some excellent points, and I get what he is saying. For one, I am f*cking sick of going to my favorite spot and it being closed. These weird bbq hours are maddening. Anyway, take a few minutes and check this article out…you’re sure to learn something. Finally, smart move by J.C. to write a bbq article.  Writing about bbq, burgers, or fajitas in Houston brings mega-hits/comments.
The Relationship: Don’t know him. Never met him. We follow each other on Twitter.

II. The Piece: Where to eat right now: 10 must-try restaurants for July by Ruthie Johnson Miller
The Opinion: I won’t go through all ten (because I can’t), but I can personally tell you she nailed it with Yelapa. I was there a few weeks back and still can’t get that eating experience out of my head. In a good way. The oysters (pictured below from my dinner), along with the ceviche were spectacular. And the margarita…memorable as well.
The Relationship: FB Friends (but just a contact). Don’t know her. Never met her.

III. The Piece: I Homebrew by SirRon
The Opinion: I don’t homebrew. In fact, I’d put homebrewing somewhere between getting my @ss crack waxed and watching golf. That doesn’t matter. This is a wonderful piece, written from the heart and with passion. I respect that, and honestly…you could replace “homebrew” with just about any interest.
The Relationship: FB friends. We have never met, but we email often.

IV. The Piece: Ask Mr. Wino: What’s in a Title? by Evan Turner
The Opinion: Another great piece if you are looking to learn something. I’ve always wondered how one becomes a sommelier. Thanks to Mr. Wino, I now know. I try my very best to check out this ongoing Q/A. Each time, I’m thankful I did.
The Relationship: None.

V. The Piece: Top Five Dining Companions to Avoid by Joanna O’Leary
The Opinion: Some of Joanna’s recent Top 5’s have been very underwhelming. Not this one. It’s damn near perfection–funny and so truthful. I just love when you can read a piece and instantly relate. I did that five times with this one. Not only did she make the right selections, but they were also in the right order. Well done.
The Relationship: She was at EOW when I wrote there. Have never met, nor talked. Have exchanged a few emails.

This a great spin on a classic blog post idea… and I say that not just because I made the cut. Honest opinions are why I’m a reader here.
