There aren’t too many Little Rock restaurants that have been open for 40 years. On Tuesday, July 17, Sandy’s Homeplace Café (1710 E 15th Street) will officially be one of them.
It’s quite an accomplishment.
Many folks are probably reading this and thinking, “I’ve never even heard of Sandy’s.” The restaurant does have a loyal base of adoring lunchtime diners, but is still somewhat of an unknown spot for many folks. Sandy’s keeps things simple, offering a small buffet of two entrees and all the sides you can eat each day during the week. It’s stick-to-your-ribs, comfort food at its finest in this no-frills eatery on the edge of downtown. Here’s the menu. I’m particularly fond of Friday, when you can find the chicken fried steak and chicken & dressing on the buffet.
“My mother, Sandra Woods, has been in that little yellow house for the whole 40 years. There were several years in there where she was the only person working the entire restaurant, cooking and all. Even now, she’s there at 5 a.m. every day to do all of the cooking. I don’t know how she does it,” says daughter Cassandra DeCoursey.
To celebrate the restaurant’s 40th anniversary, Sandra will be offering free cake (strawberry and coconut) next Tuesday, July 17 to customers. That day’s entrées are chicken fried steak and chicken livers with sides of mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, white beans, rice, and boiled okra.
If you’re free for lunch, please go check them out!

Sandy’s is a Great place for the locals. Everyone from Factory workers in the area to CEO’s downtown. Oh yeah, and COPS from all agencies. I was one.
