Ever wonder what other foodies are thinking?  Me too!

1. What is the name of your blog? BeantownEats

2. Could you describe your blog in one sentence? A Boston based food and drink website with restaurant suggestions, industry news, recipes and original, creative articles.

3. How did you get into food blogging? We both really love food and cooking, so we created a food and drink website that we would want to read ourselves.

4. What’s the toughest part of writing about food? Lin: Not using the same words and phrases over and over again. I also try to keep our audience and goal in perspective. I am no expert or food critic, but I like to eat, I enjoy a well-made cocktail and I always try to keep that in mind while writing. Jon: I usually let Lin take care of most of the food writing. She does a great job with it, so I tend to stick to more unconventional (and fun!) articles that appeal to everyone, not just food lovers.

5. What’s been your favorite food moment? Lin: Eating my first lobster at Federal Jack’s in Kennebuck, Maine. Jon: My mother is Italian and a wonderful cook, so I truly enjoyed going to Italy twice with her and sharing some fantastic food together. For BeantownEats, we’ve had so many terrific moments since we have started our website, but we really enjoyed seeing Bourdain and Rippert live at Boston Symphony Hall.

6. Do you have a top restaurant? If so, what’s the name and is there an item you generally order? Lin: There are so many amazing places in and around Boston that it’s really hard to have just one. Recently, La Morra has been pretty high on the list; their osso bucco last winter was amazing. Jon: I absolutely love Fore Street in Portland, Maine. It is one of the best restaurants I have eaten at recently. In Boston, I love many local establishments such as Clio, Bernard’s in Chestnut Hill, and Bricco in the North End for their amazing homemade Pappardelle al Cinghiale (pictured).

7. What’s one U.S. city you’d travel to just for the food? Lin: Portland, OR Jon: San Francisco. It has some fantastic chefs, restaurants, great cocktail locations and it’s close to wine country. Can’t beat that!

8. Is there a food you absolutely despise? Lin: Cantaloupe. I don’t know why, but I can’t even stand the smell of it. Jon: It’s more like a condiment…Mayo. Yuck.

9. What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever eaten? Lin: Octopus Ceviche at Chef Andre Garces’ Distrito in Philly. Jon: Mayo. Accidentally on a burger.

10. Are you more likely to stick with what you know, or do you try something new each time? Lin: Depends on the menu. I really like to branch out and try new things. I’m not that picky of an eater so it makes it easy to be a little adventurous. But there are definitely a small handful of restaurants where I have a hard time not getting that same favorite dish. Jon: It can be hard not to order what you love and feel comfortable with, but like Lin it really depends on the place. I am definitely open to trying new items, especially if the restaurant is known for it.

Great interview!

As Lin mentions, I also find that not using the same words and phrases over and over again is one of the most difficult aspects of food writing (and blogging in general).

La Morra is amazing! I haven’t been there in years. I used to sell wine to them when I worked for Select Wine Imports.. the restaurant is so romantic. You can tell all a lot of love goes into everything they do there.

I can’t wait to go to La Morra now! I live in Brookline, so no excuses.

Jon and I have been meaning to go back since they’ve reopened after the fire. We should all go soon!

YES! Sooner than later. Let’s set something up and I’ll get a babysitter.
