Mondays are dedicated to bringing you a restaurant review. This week, we head West to San Antonio.
The Background
I went to college in San Antonio (UTSA). Dining out in those days mainly consisted of below average chain restaurants located off I-10. Suffice to say, I wasn’t the biggest fan of San Antonio’s culinary scene. A few trips in recent years to the Riverwalk obviously did nothing to change my opinion. Then I found the South Alamo Street new trendy, artsy district. This led me to Rosario’s.
The Restaurant
Hip, but casual. Take a date or take the kids. This place has a cool decor that’s none too pretentious. The bar was a hit, acting as the centerpiece of the restaurant. On a Saturday night, the place was full, but the service was fast, so don’t expect too long of a wait.
The Food
The margaritas, both frozen and on the rocks, were a hit. The ceviche appetizer was ridiculously good. Filled with white fish, and red onions, and cilantro, and on and on. High levels of citrus didn’t overwhelm the dish, like many ceviches I eat. This is a must order. And so are the chicken soft tacos, loaded with all the standard fixings, along with some queso fresco. Also, don’t hesitate to delve into the smokey chipotle salsa.
The Verdict
If you’re visiting San Antonio, head a mile or two off the beaten touristy path, and check out Rosario’s. And if you live in SA, and haven’t been, go! The entire area seems to have undergone a tremendous amount of revitalization. I spotted nice bars to sit out and enjoy a drink, a Belgium restaurant, a comfort food place, and a nice Italian eatery. Just keep your eyes peeled when heading down S. Alamo and odds are you’ll find a nice spot.

I used to love to go to Rosario’s when I lived in San Antonio for college. However, the Italian place across the street is not great. Skip it!
Good tip…we almost ended up going there. Thanks Jamie.
