I’ve been somewhat vocal about our lack of really good breakfast options around Little Rock. Off the top of my head, the only places that truly stand out, at least for me, are The Root Café, At the Corner, Boulevard Bread Co., and Gadwall’s Grill.

After last Saturday morning, add Taqueria Guadalajara to the mix.

My breakfast with Jarred Kibbey and WooPigFoodie proved to a winner, and one that really made me harken back to my Houston days, when a good, Mexican food breakfast was a weekly event. Why it took me over five years to try Guadalajara, I’ll never quite figure out. I’ll just use the bullshit excuse of it being too far away from my house.

Truth be told, its Levy location is only a 20-minute drive, a distance well worth a top-notch breakfast.

Huevos Rancheros

I decided to go off-menu and order the Huevos Rancheros, a dish normally comprised of two over-easy eggs resting on corn tortillas and topped with a warm, pureed salsa. Not Guadalajara’s version. It does have the two eggs, but theirs comes with a delicious grilled veggie topper, along with servings of rice and beans. Let’s start with the latter … the rice was perfectly fluffy and the lard-based beans were a wonderful marriage of creamy and slightly chunky textures. The crispy sides of the fried eggs gave way to runny yolks that ended up blending with the rest of the plate’s ingredients, which included chunks of spicy jalapenos.

The entire plate of food, which I didn’t finish, cost $6.90 .. and that’s with an added pork tamale. BTW, I’d pass on the tamales. Although the meat was quite tender, it was bland, and the masa was just too fluffy for my preference.

A bite of Jarred’s Huevos con Chorizo was met with favorable results, as was my taste of Woo’s menudo.

Heard enough?

Great, now please add Taqueria Guadalajara to your list of fantastic breakfast options.

Looks like I’ll be coming back soon to try out lunch and dinner.
