Let’s face it, when it comes to banh mi sandwiches, we don’t have a ton of options here in Little Rock. I know Mike’s Café has a good one and The Root does its creative spin on the traditional Vietnamese sandwich.

But for the most part, our options are fairly limited.

That’s why I was so excited to see one pop up on Boulevard Bistro’s menu when we stopped in for dinner over the weekend. Boulevard’s version comes with a house-made pork sausage, pickled carrots, sliced radish, jalapenos, cucumber, cilantro, and a sriracha mayo … all between one of their soft hoagie rolls.

It was a very tasty sandwich, highlighted by the sausage, which had a wonderful exterior crispiness to it from a nice grill job. Like any good banh mi, the key is marrying the flavors and textures of the other ingredients. The cool mayo, the spicy jalapenos, and the crunchy carrots were the perfect accompaniments to the sausage, as was the roll.

The sandwich came with an order of fries and cost $11. The only thing I’d change about this banh mi would be to slice the sausage in half, length-wise. As it’s currently constructed, when you bite into the whole sausage, the rest of the sandwich tends to fall apart. Also, I love Boulevard’s fries … some of my favorite in town. I just wish they’d put a few more on the plate.

All and all, it was a fantastic dinner at Boulevard Bistro, highlighted by the banh mi and Magic Hat Hefeweizen (which they currently have on tap). Please go try out the sandwich and let me know what you think.
